The Unity of the Church And the Kingdom of God

Dear Editor: The Church has a purpose — to produce saints for the Kingdom of God. The Unity of the Church is secondary to its primary purpose — inspiring people to give up doing their own will in order to do God’s will (“The Role of the Pope Emeritus And the Unity of the Church,” The Editor’s Space, Feb. 2).

Why I Am Not a Democrat Anymore

Dear Editor: I am having an extremely hard time listening to the platform of the Democrat National Party. They seem to campaign with two mantras: They hate Donald Trump and they voraciously defend abortion. It really doesn’t matter who the Democrat is. The message is still the same. Their second mantra is one of the reasons why I left the DNC decades ago.

Nancy Pelosi — The Poor And the Persecuted

Dear Editor: Your editorial (“Remembering What Nancy Pelosi Forgot,” Feb. 29) calls out Speaker Pelosi for not mentioning Christians in her prayer. She asked God’s help for several groups by name; it would seem to me that “other religious minorities, often unseen and unnamed” might include Christians.

It’s Time to Be Courageous And Persevere

Dear Editor: I was very pleased to see and read about our pro-life president (“Trump Makes History at March for Life,” Feb. 1), but in shock about full pages about discerning Democrats (“Catholic Iowa Democrats Weigh Choices,” Jan. 25).

Pray for Those Affected By the Coronavirus

As much as we don’t want to cause panic or throw fuel on the fire of hysteria concerning the coronavirus, we need to take it seriously. Medical doctors are very clear that this is a highly contagious virus and is much worse than the seasonal flu.

When They Took My Dad Away

A particular reading from the lectionary can strike one with an impact that reverberates through the years. Such is my experience with Sirach 3: 2-7, 12-14.

Although I’ve lived the last 45 years in Park Slope as a member of St. Saviour parish, I grew up in Maine. In 1952 when I was eight years old, my father was removed from our home and committed to a mental hospital where he remained for a year and a half. He was diagnosed with manic depression, now termed bipolar disorder. When Dad returned home, he remained stable for a number of years.

Decisions, Decisions!

Let’s be clear about one thing: Serpents don’t talk. They never have, and they never will. The inspired storytellers who were responsible for crafting the Genesis narrative that is Sunday’s first reading knew full well that serpents don’t talk, and the earliest hearers and readers of those words didn’t imagine that they could.

A Sacramental World

On the feast of Christ the King, the reading from St. Paul was from Paul’s letter to the Colossians. Though I have often been inspired by this text from Paul, for some reason it seemed to take on new meaning for me.
