Poles Celebrate 100th Anniversary of Independence

One hundred years after the restoration of Polish independence from the German, Austrian and Russian Empires, Poles in the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens gathered Oct. 20 in thanksgiving for their heritage at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, Prospect Heights. “We recognize the great contribution that the Polish people have made to this diocese,” said Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, who concelebrated the Mass. “Keep that culture alive because in it you have your faith and if we lose one we may lose the other.” Bishop DiMarzio was joined by Auxiliary Bishops Witold Mroziewski, Guy Sansaricq and Octavio Cisneros. Bishop Józef Guzdek, the bishop of the Polish military, was the main celebrant. He said the best way to honor those who died for Polish independence is to preserve their love of Poland. He praised parents for their diligence in passing their heritage onto their children.
