Obituary: Sister Agnes Alphonse Finamore, C.S.J.

Sister Agnes Alphonse Finamore, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I. for 77 years, died April 25 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.

She entered the congregation in 1940 from St. Ephrem parish, Dyker Heights. She earned her bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s degree in mathematics from St. John’s College.

She taught at St. Francis Xavier, Park Slope, 1941-42; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park, 1943; Immaculate Heart of Mary, Windsor Terrace, 1943-45; St. Anthony of Padua in Greenpoint, 1945-47; St. Angela Hall Academy in Clinton Hill, 1947-50; Holy Child of Jesus, Richmond Hill, 1950-52; Colegio San Conrado, Puerto Rico, 1952-55, and 1956-57; and Academia San Jose, Puerto Rico, 1955-56.

She returned to the States and ministered at Our Lady of Lourdes, Bushwick, 1957-60; Queen of All Saints, Fort Greene, 1960-63; The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, 1963-64; Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, 1964-67; and St. Joseph H.S., Downtown Brooklyn, 1970-74.

She was principal of Blessed Sacrament, Cypress Hills, 1967-70; and then superior of the Nurses Residence at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, as well as secretary to the director of nursing and she assisted in the payroll department.

Unofficial assignments through the years included teaching math to telephone company employees at Willoughby Street two nights a week.  In Epiphany parish, she taught evening classes to Spanish-speaking adults who were preparing for their high school equivalency test.

She retired in 2013.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
