Father Joseph A. Gancila, a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn who was serving as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church, Dyker Heights, died on Jan. 6. He was 50.

Vivian Wohlfarth, mother of Deacon Eugene Wohlfarth of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Bayside, died Dec. 6 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 80.

Sister Marie Chaminade Sheehan, O.P., a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic at Amityville for 69 years, died Nov. 30 at Carlin Hall at their Motherhouse in Amityville. She was 99.

Sister Veronica Therese Charlton, O.Carm, a member of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm for 62 years, died Nov. 12 at the Ozanam Hall Nursing Home of Queens in Bayside. She was 80.

Alfred E. Smith IV, a philanthropist and great-grandson of former New York Gov. Alfred E. Smith, died Nov. 20 at his home in New Canaan, Conn. He was 68.

Sister Mary Carmel DeSantis, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 71 years, died July 19 at the Mercy Center, Dallas, Pa. She was 95.

Sister Janet Lee, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 57 years, died Sept. 6 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, L.I. She was 88.

Sister Grace Agate, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 53 years, died Oct. 14 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Savannah, Ga. She was 71.

Sister Barbara McKenna, R.S.M., formerly Sister Mary Grignion, a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas for 58 years, died Oct. 24 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, L.I. She was 76.
