Astoria Faithful Seek Healing on Assumption

tt-OLMC_Assumption2016

Several dozen parishioners of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Astoria gathered at the local city beach on the feast of Mary’s Assumption with Msgr. Sean Ogle, pastor, to pray for healing and touch the waters. The parish honored a centuries-old custom practiced in Europe, originating in the patristic notion that Mary’s Assumption sanctified all waters as she wept for joy in her reunion with Jesus in heaven. The pilgrimage to the local waters was observed as part of the parish’s 175th anniversary year. (Photo courtesy Fermina Gutierrez)
