John DeRiso, 77, one of the driving forces behind the Support Group for the Physically Challenged at St. Helen’s parish, Howard Beach, died March 8.

Eileen M. Coen, 96, died on Feb. 28. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village, from 1924 to 1986. She was active in the Rosary and altar society and participated in a number of parish theater productions in the 1970s.

Pastor Placed on Leave
The Diocese of Brooklyn has placed Father Charles Oduro, pastor of St. Catherine of Genoa parish, Flatbush, on administrative leave due to an allegation of sexual harassment against him. An adult female employee of the parish made the complaint, which is currently under investigation.

The Cost of Education
It was recently announced that two more of our Catholic academies, one in Rego Park, and the other in Queens Village, will shut their doors after the current semester. The reasons are all too familiar – rising costs and decreasing enrollment!
