On Friday, March 20, 7:45 p.m., the four premiere ensembles from the music department at St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, will be presenting their annual Jazz/Pop Concert. They are the jazz band, chamber choir, honors percussion ensemble and chamber orchestra.
Senior drummer Gabriel Godoy said this concert allows students to be individually expressive, given the nature of the music. Repertoire for the evening will include rock favorites like “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” originally recorded by Guns N’ Roses, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” originally recorded by Green Day and the big band standard “Sing, Sing, Sing.”
The Jazz Band from Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy and the fourth- and fifth-grade violin students from P.S. 115 will have the opportunity to share the stage with their older counterparts.
“This is a great opportunity for the younger students to perform with high schoolers that they look up to,” said the Prep’s director of string studies, Robert L. Johnston. “For the high schoolers, it gives them a perspective of where they’ve come from, and how much they’ve grown since they were that age.”
The evening’s special guest will be New Orleans musician, Davell Crawford, who will perform as a soloist and with the Prep ensembles.
$5 tickets will be available at the door. For information, call Dr. Robert Corbino, at 718-423-8810, ext 255.
