Sports Round-Up June 17

The 2017 GCHSAA softball season saw the following teams emerge as champions:

Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, captured the varsity ‘AA’ city championship after also winning the varsity ‘AA’ division diocesan title.

Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, won the varsity ‘A’ city championship following a victory in the varsity ‘A’ division diocesan title game.

Nazareth H.S., East Flatbush, captured the varsity ‘B’ division diocesan title.

St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, won the junior varsity ‘AA’ division diocesan title, while St. Edmund Prep H.S., Sheepshead Bay, took home the junior varsity ‘A’ division diocesan title.

In CHSAA baseball, Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, and Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, all earned berths into the varsity ‘AA’ city championship tournament.

Msgr. McClancy and Archbishop Molloy reached the tournament on the junior varsity ‘AA’ level. In varsity ‘A’ action, Nazareth H.S., East Flatbush, finished as the runner-up in the city championship game.


The CYO outdoor track season saw three new records set by young athletes. In the senior boys’ 800-meter relay (4×200) at Tom Farrell Meet on May 6, Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village, set a new record of 1:52.0.

On May 21, the senior girls from Our Lady of Lourdes broke the record in the 400-meter medley with a time of 1:00.2. Ishil Kirkhan from Our Lady of the Snows, North Floral Park, set the record in the girls’ 800-meter run on April 30 and then broke her own record on May 21 with a time of 2:38.5.


The first-ever CYO flag football season wrapped up with the following teams winning their respective diocesan championships:

Pee Wee: Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside

Bantam: St. Gregory the Great, Bellerose

Intermediate: St. Joseph, Astoria
