Sister Irene Murphy, G.N.S.H., 98, a member of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, Philadelphia, Pa., for 78 years, died July 31.

A native of Lowell, Mass., she entered the congregation on Sept. 15, 1940. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from D’Youville College, Buffalo.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Regis, she ministered in education for 51 years. She taught locally at Blessed Sacrament in Jackson Heights; St. Leo’s in Corona and Our Lady of Fatima, Jackson Heights.

She retired to the motherhouse in 1994. Declining health necessitated a move to the Redeemer Sisters Magnificat Center in 2016.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Sister Estelle Marie, G.N.S.H., and Sister Mary Alice, G.N.S.H.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 4 in the Redeemer Sisters’ Chapel, Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
