Sister Bernadette Wynne, R.S.M., 83, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 66 years, died Feb. 21 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended St. Agatha School, Sunset Park, and then the Mercy Juniorate H.S., Fort Greene.

She entered the Brooklyn Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in Syosset, L.I., in February, 1952, and professed her final vows in September, 1957.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University followed by her master’s in special education for the blind and visually impaired from San Francisco State College, Calif.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Uriel, she taught in St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1954-56; St. Jerome, East Flatbush, 1956-61; and St. Pius X, Plainview, 1962-65; and spent one year as a cook at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, 1961-62.

She devoted 40 years to ministering as an itinerant teacher of the blind for the Rockville Centre Diocese; a teacher of the deaf-blind at the Helen Keller National Center in Sands Point, L.I.; and finally, coordinator of the national training team for the Helen Keller Center, which took her around the world to train teachers of the blind.

Her final ministry was as a team member at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, where she lovingly cared for the aging members of her community, 2015-17.

She is survived by her sister, Viola Wynne of Ludlow, Vt.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone. Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
