Sister Gloria

Sister Mary Gloria Garcia, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 65 years, died Feb. 2 at the Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.

She entered the congregation from Holy Cross parish, Flatbush, in 1953.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, and a master’s in political science from Brooklyn College.

She served as the non-governmental organization (NGO) representative of the Congregations of St. Joseph in the U.S. at the United Nations, 1986-96. This ministry incorporated her passion for global concerns, especially related to women and children, ability to articulate her vision and mission and to bring people together who shared this common commitment.

She taught at Visitation B.V.M., Red Hook, 1955-58; St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, 1958-59; Our Lady of Victory, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1959-64; St. Malachy, East New York, 1964-67; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Long Island City, 1967-70; St. Rose of Lima, Parkville, 1970-71; and St. Brendan, Midwood, 1971-75, where she served as principal.

On the secondary level, she taught at Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, 1975-82, and The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, 1982-90.

She also was the director of development of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, 1990-96.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
