New Housing for Developmentally Disabled to Be Named in Honor of Sister of Mercy

“Sister Kay” would call it a dream come true. In an event that furthers its mission of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Mercy Home, a local nonprofit, officially broke ground Tuesday, Oct. 3, for a new housing development that will rise in Brooklyn’s steadily gentrifying Gowanus neighborhood.

Sister Dolores Spinner, R.S.M.

Sister Dolores Spinner, R.S.M., 85, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 63 years, died Sept. 24, at Flushing Hospital.

Sister Mary Jareth McElhinney, R.S.M.

Sister Mary Jareth McElhinney, R.S.M., 79, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 57 years, died Aug. 4 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.

Sister Mildred Donohue, R.S.M.

Sister Mildred Donohue, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 74 years, died Sept. 1 at Maria Regina Residence in  Brentwood. She was 93.

Sister Mary Travers, R.S.M.

Sister Mary Travers, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 66 years, died June 16 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood. She was 87.

Sister Bernadette Wynne, R.S.M.

Sister Bernadette Wynne, R.S.M., 83, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 66 years, died Feb. 21 at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone.

Sister Margretta Driscoll, R.S.M.

Sister Margretta Driscoll, R.S.M., 87, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 65 years, died Dec. 8 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.

Sister Virginia Walsh, R.S.M.

Sister Virginia Walsh, R.S.M., 93, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 76 years, died July 8 at her residence in Fresh Meadows.
