On Dec. 12 and 13 at 7:45 p.m., the music department of St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, will be presenting its annual Christmas concerts.
“You can’t anticipate what your experience will be unless you’re immersed in the process,” said senior violinist Joanna Kanellopoulos. Like many of her peers, Kanellopoulos did not start playing violin until she arrived at Prep.
“I didn’t know I had this talent, and I’m glad I started here,” said Brianna Corredor, junior.
One of the great elements of Prep’s music program is that there’s a place for everyone, from those who have years of experience to those who are just starting out. In all, over 550 students, more than 20 percent of the student body, will be performing. Each night features a different lineup of the department’s 11 performing ensembles that include three bands, three orchestras, three choirs and two percussion ensembles.
Additionally, there will be a number of special guests, including students from P.S. 115, M.S. 74, I.S. 77 and St. Andrew Avellino School. The roster of guests also includes participants from the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music Musical Theatre Summer Workshop at Queens College and the music ministry of St. Nicholas of Tolentine parish.
The repertoire will include both traditional classic works, as well as holiday favorites like a medley from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” performed by Prep’s chamber orchestra, and “Riu, Riu, Chiu,” performed by Prep’s concert chorus. The jazz band will also present a set of jazz favorites.
Tickets are $5. Both performances will be held in Prep’s Brother Ralph Clifford Memorial Auditorium, 6100 Francis Lewis Blvd. in Fresh Meadows. Doors open at 7:15 p.m., and tickets are available at the door.
