A Mass of Christian Burial for Father Joseph F. Wiseman, a senior priest, will be celebrated at Mary’s Nativity Church, Flushing, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. He died Jan. 29 at Flushing Hospital at the age of 93.
Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. Brendan’s School, Brooklyn Prep; St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, and St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore.
He was ordained June 7, 1952 by Bishop Thomas E. Molloy at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Brooklyn.
He served as an assistant at Immaculate Conception, Astoria, 1952-63; Assumption, Brooklyn Heights, 1963-71; St. Jerome’s, East Flatbush, 1971-90, and Holy Family, Flushing, 1990-94. He was also a member of the Priests’ Purgatorial Society. He retired in 1994.
In retirement, he lived at Mary’s Nativity rectory, before moving to Bishop Mugavero Residence, Douglaston.
Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto is scheduled to be the main celebrant. Special concelebrants will include Fathers Edward M. Kachurka and Louis De Gaetano.
Msgr. Edward Ryan will be the homilist.
“At his 65th anniversary of his ordination last June,” Msgr. Ryan recalled, “Father Wiseman still possessed all the enthusiasm and joy of a newly ordained priest.”
Msgr. Ryan grew in friendship with Father Wiseman while they were both in resident at Mary’s Nativity.
“He had such an innocence of life that it was so easy to make him laugh. He was a delight to live with and an inspiration which came from being so close to Jesus,” Msgr. Ryan added.
Among the immediate survivors was his niece Mary Bakoyiannis of Flushing.
Burial was in the priests’ plot at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
