Dear Editor: In response to Father Cush’s article on the Eucharist (June 17).
“There is no doubt that we have in many ways lost a sense of wonder and awe concerning the Eucharist,” he writes.
I would like to suggest some other ways that “we” could regain the respect that is due to the Body and Blood of Christ.
First, any current Catholic church that does not have the tabernacle in the center should begin to plan on locating it there. One should never have to look around a Catholic church to find the location of the tabernacle. The center of our Faith, the Eucharist, should be center.
Second, in response to “Do we take time to pray after the reception of Holy Communion?” Since silence is conducive to prayer, it would be helpful if singing or organ playing resumes a minute or so after the Eucharist is returned to the tabernacle. Even if a band of angels were to come down and sing on the altar, it would not equal the power of silence that should automatically prevail during that time. It also gives people who have received Communion “…..time to realize…..” and to pray accordingly.
Third, the choir, including any music, currently on or near the altar in many churches during Mass, would be better located in the choir loft, as it is so appropriately named, from where it can be heard, but not seen. Coincidentally, applause for singing is more appropriate at a concert, than at Mass.
Fourth, anybody serving on the altar, whether in the capacity as “altar server” or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, should be dressed appropriately.
I feel confident if these suggestions are accepted, reverence for the Eucharist would be increased. It will be nothing new, just a return to normalcy.
