Dear Editor: Bishop Valero ordained my dad in 1985. One day a few years later we were together at a Confirmation diner at St. Margaret’s. The bishop asked my dad to freshen his drink. I looked at him and said, “So that’s what deacons do!” He laughed a really genuine laugh.

He was a very nice man to be around, and I believe that he was also very holy. I hope that he and my dad are chatting about that day.
