Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women in the U.S., other than skin cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You can work for a cure for your wife, mother, your sister, your daughter or yourself by supporting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The walk is Sunday, Oct. 16 at 8 a.m. at The Nethermead in Prospect Park and at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The Dorothy Bennett Mercy Center is celebrating two significant milestones this month: its 10th annual fundraiser as well as its 20th anniversary year.
Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1995, the Clinton Hill/Bedford-Stuyvesant-based center offers continually evolving programs to meet the needs of children and families in the Fort Greene and Bed-Stuy areas. These programs address concerns ranging from violence and drugs, to unemployment, discrimination, illiteracy and lack of affordable housing.   A double anniversary celebration will be held at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club in Belle Harbor on Friday, Oct. 14. Amuse, an accomplished women’s vocal group will be presenting a concert of sacred music at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Astoria, on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The program, titled “Wholly Holy,” features the works of Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria and Dufay among others. Admission is $20 at the door, but seniors get a $10 discount and children are free.
