Sister Elizabeth Proefriedt, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 66 years, died April 29 in Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.
She entered the congregation in 1950 from Our Lady of Lourdes, Bushwick. She obtained a bachelor’s in science from St. John’s University, Jamaica, and a master’s of leadership in science from Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn. She was certified in clinical pastoral education from Central Islip Psychiatric Center and Hospital Chaplaincy, Inc.
A member of Pax Christi Metro New York, she received the Pax Christi Metro Award in 2003.
Formerly known as Sister Vincent Loretto, she taught at St. John the Evangelist, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1952-56; St. Vincent de Paul, Williamsburg, 1956-57; and St. Stanislaus Kostka, Greenpoint, 1957-62.
On the secondary level, she taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help H.S., Sunset Park, 1962-65; Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, 1965-75; and St. Angela Hall Academy H.S., Clinton Hill, 1975-76.
Her vast ministries included the House of Prayer Experience (H.O.P.E.), Convent Station, N.J., 1976-78; Sacred Heart Seminary, Hempstead, L.I., 1978-79; St. Pius X, Plainview, L.I., 1979-81; Abba House of Prayer, Albany, 1981-83; and St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood, 1983-86.
She also ministered at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, Manhattan, 1986-87; Booth Memorial Medical Center, Flushing, 1987-89; Woodhull Medical Center, Williamsburg, 1989-91; Catherine Martin Inn, Hempstead, L.I., 1991-92; My Childhood Center, Brooklyn, 1992-93; Family Center Catholic Charities, Astoria, 1993-99; and Queens Women’s Network, Jamaica, 2000-13.
She retired in 2013.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Thomas More Church on the St. John’s University campus.
