Msgr. McClancy M.H.S. Going Co-ed

The Board of Trustees of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the McClancy Board of Governors announced that Msgr. McClancy Memorial H.S., East Elmhurst, will begin admitting girls, in addition to boys, beginning in the fall of 2012.
Brother Joseph Holthaus, S.C., school president, said, “For more than the last half-century, Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School has provided a small school environment where students are known, valued, treasured and taught in partnership with the family.
“The academic leadership team at McClancy has spent a significant amount of time studying the potential co-educational expansion of the student population serviced, recognizing a need for an additional co-educational high school in our area.  After a thorough deliberation, significant capital investment and following several of our other eastern seaboard schools successfully transitioning into co-educational settings, we will begin a gradual grade-by-grade progression beginning in the fall 2012 semester,” he added.
Among the school’s prominent alumni, Stephen Squeri, President of Global Services & Chief Information Officer at American Express said, “In today’s world those that don’t evolve with the times become irrelevant. Providing young women with the same opportunity that the Brothers of the Sacred Heart have provided to young men is a long overdue step. This step will provide all of our youth with a more well rounded and diversified educational experience. On the heels of our historic capital campaign, this demonstrates to the community that McClancy is evolving with the times.”

Over the last several years, the Brothers, with the support of McClancy’s alumni and outside grants, have realized more than $10,000,000 in upgrades to the physical infrastructure of the school and its facilities to provide students with the most advanced classroom technology and learning environment.  Enhancements  include:  classroom and technology modernization (including smartboards/whiteboards), 3 new science labs (Summer 2011), a new media center and art studio (Summer 2012), air conditioning & soundproofing of the entire facility, new locker rooms, upgraded gymnasium, athletic field and newly resurfaced running track, to name a few projects.

James Carey, Principal of McClancy for the last 14 years explained how the change will be implemented, “Beginning with the Fall 2012, only the McClancy freshman class (Class of 2016) will be co-educational.  In Fall 2013 we will be offering freshman and sophomore co-educational instruction, until Fall 2015 when all four grades will be co-educational.  We are thrilled and excited that our future women graduates will join over 8,800 McClancy alumni into the 21st Century.”

Prominent McClancy alumni also include: Admiral John T. Blake, U.S. Navy, Executive Chief of Naval Operations; Dr. Joseph Tibaldi, MD, Director of Endocrinology at Flushing Hospital; Kevin Sheehan, CEO of Norwegian Cruise Lines; Don Cooper, Pitching Coach, Chicago White Sox; Thomas J.
