The Tablet gathered local Catholic high school newspaper staffs for a day of friendly competition and press appreciation.
The Stanner of Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, kept its winning streak alive for the fourth year in a row by placing first in the General Excellence category.
New to this year’s competition was The Trumpet of Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, and although they did not compete, young newsmen from Cathedral Prep and Seminary, Elmhurst, came to the ceremonies with the first issue of their relaunched newspaper, The Current. The Tablet Editor Ed Wilkinson got his journalism start writing for The Current, and Tablet reporter Marie Elena Giossi first came to the event as a student when she was the editor of The Trumpet.
This year’s guest speaker was Greg Shemitz, a freelance photojournalist who works closely with Catholic News Service. He shared his photos and gave the students tips on how to make a good photo great.
