Daniel J. McCarthy died March 21 at St. Francis Hospital, Roslyn, L.I., from pneumonia. He was 84.
A native of Brooklyn, he grew up in Williamsburg where he attended Epiphany elementary school. He attended Bishop Loughlin H.S., and St. Francis College, both Brooklyn.
He was an all-star baseball player and is a member of each institution’s Hall of Fame. After graduation from St. Francis, he was drafted by the New York Yankees and played several seasons in their minor league in Greensboro, N.C.
McCarthy also served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and their children, Marie Murphy, Diane McCarthy, Daniel McCarthy, and Helen Loumeau; and two sisters, Helen McCormack of Our Lady of Angels, Bay Ridge, and Rose McGovern; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Burial was at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
