From the excitement, glitter, and sophistication of New York City to the slums of Lima, Peru, deep in poverty, dirt, and garbage, Nooshin Nassiri has chosen to live in the latter as a young lay missionary for abandoned children at the Community Cenacolo’s Villa El Salvador Mission House called Help and Hope.
Around the Church Bells: Blessed, Broken and Given
Young people were able to encounter the church in a big way as they prayed with nearly 20,000 teens from more than 100 dioceses at the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC). The Diocese of Brooklyn brought teens from St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands; St. Sebastian’s, Woodside; St. Dominic’s, Bensonhurst, and St. Mark’s, Sheepshead Bay.
Around the Church Bells – Night of Worship at Regina Pacis
In a collaborative effort between the two parish youth groups from the Basilica of Regina Pacis and Most Precious Blood-Ss. Simon and Jude, a night dedicated for fellowship and Eucharistic Adoration was held at St. Joseph Chapel in Bensonhurst, Nov. 15.
Let Them Speak: Praying Twice for Mother Cabrini
On one of the most historically rich days of our Italian community, I was fortunate to be on the diocesan float with Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and the Mother Cabrini statue that was presented to our community in a procession and Mass which I had attended with my mother and many of the proud religious organizations.

Msgr. McClancy Memorial H.S. in East Elmhurst commissioned 16 students as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at their All Saints/All Souls liturgy. The celebrant was Father Jose Diaz from St. Leo’s in Corona.
Let Them Speak: More Than Just a Saint
Saint Philomena, the patron saint of youth and babies, died on Aug. 10, 304, at the age of 13. She was canonized in 1837 and her feast day is Aug.11. An interesting fact is that she died on a Friday at 3 p.m. just like when Jesus did on Good Friday.
