Ashamed by the Silence

Dear Editor: Regarding the National Black Catholic Congress in Orlando July 6, Gail DeGeorge’s July 22 article, “Convention Tells Bishops: Support Black Lives Matter,” states that Auxiliary Bishop Fernand Cheri III of New Orleans, La., told the convention: “I apologize to you as a leader of the church because I feel we have abandoned you in the Black Lives Matter movement and I apologize.”

The bishop’s apology didn’t surprise me. Catholic Bishops have been silent about the vicious 24/7 attacks on President Donald Trump, his family and supporters. They have been silent when a Bernie Sanders supporter shot up the Congressional baseball practice. Silent when Black Lives Matter riots took place in the streets, burning buildings and destroying property. Silent when Trump is assassinated in a play on stage in Central Park, and when a comedian holds up the head of Trump like a proud ISIS fighter.

Worse still, silent when Black Lives Matter led mobs onto the streets and highways of Manhattan chanting: “What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want them? NOW!”

In anti-police demonstrations since, another chant has been, “Pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon.”

This is pure hatred, and as it is directed against white cops, racist.

Did a single Catholic cardinal, bishop or priest denounce any of these outrages as dangerous incitement?

I am ashamed of my Church leaders for failing to speak out against the absolute “hatred” of President Trump.
