CSW2013: St. Mel’s School, Flushing

Flushing’s Hidden Gem

St. Mel’s School has been providing Catholic education with academic excellence on the Flushing/Whitestone border since 1960.
In the Catholic tradition of imitating Christ, we create and maintain an atmosphere of growth in our Catholic identity as well as academic excellence and social and emotional development of the students.
We boast a holistic approach to the child by incorporating a curriculum of academic studies, foreign language, computers, physical education, art, music and religious studies.
Located in Flushing, we serve nursery age through eighth-grade children from Flushing, Whitestone, College Point and Bayside. What makes our school special is the combination of activities that take place both inside and outside of the classrooms:
• Principal and select staff are trained as Common Core Curriculum Leadership by St. John’s University.
• Community Service: donate to a local food pantry, collect gently used coats for the NY Cares Coat Drive, fund bricks for Ronald McDonald House, send Christmas cards to troops, collect money and items for Bridge to Life, American Heart Association, Heavenly Hats and breast cancer research.
• Entire school is Wi-Fi connected through technology grants. We have two fully equipped technology labs – an Early Childhood Technology Center and our main computer lab, both with desktops, laptops, webcams – and SMART Boards in every classroom K-8, a SMART Table for primary grades and several iPads for students.
• Activities include Girl Scouts, yearbook, Student Service Squad, Student Council, Photography Club, Aquinas Honor Society, Adopt-a-Sister, Sports Day and Spirit Days.
• Full and partial high school scholarships are awarded to our students for nearly $400,000.
• One of only three diocesan schools to be part of the Title IID Voices in History Grant – Enhancing Education through Technology.
• Diocesan Champions in CYO Sports.
• After-school program (5:45 p.m.).
• Dedicated Home School Assoc.
