CSW2013: St. Francis of Assisi C.A., Flatbush

Fostering a Peaceful World

Located in the Prospect/Lefferts Gardens area of Flatbush, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy has educated children for more than 104 years in the Catholic tradition of excellence. The school follows the Common Core State Standards and is committed to including art and music to enhance the educational program. Various activities develop and honor the many gifts of the children.
We seek to provide students with an excellent religious and academic education. Our Faith Formation Program enables students to develop a deeper understanding of Jesus’ teachings and challenges students to model their lives accordingly. This program comprises five interrelated components: scripture, worship, doctrine, community and service. We believe that the intellectual, affective, social and physical spheres are woven together in the fabric of the whole person.
Through an integrated curriculum, cooperative learning, peace education and community service, we strive to develop the skills, abilities, talents and attitudes, which will enable our students to become caring, competent individuals with a sense of reverence for the earth and all its inhabitants. We hope to empower our students to exercise their responsibility as Christians to work with others to create a just and peaceful world.
Our students receive competitive test scores on New York state standardized tests. More than half of our graduates go on to Catholic high schools, where they have received an average of $150,000 in scholarships, as well as public and private schools.
Our staff consists of dedicated educators and has been administered by the Sisters of St. Joseph since the school opened in 1909. Dedicated to our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, peace education is integral to our program.  Students are taught to be peer mediators; classes include focus on conflict resolution and non-violent behavior.
The school teaches students from pre-kindergarten to grade eight. Financial aid is available.
