BAY RIDGE — Despite his outlaw persona, Johnny Cash was a man of deep faith and conviction who devoted his life to studying the Scriptures. The “Man in Black” also received a degree in theology and became an ordained minister. As a result, his songs, both religious and secular, expressed his deep faith in God and his ongoing struggle between sin and redemption.
Cash was born a Baptist and raised on the gospel songs he heard in church, but he was attracted to many different denominations during his lifetime. He was married to his first wife, Vivian Liberto, in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. Vivian was a devout Catholic, and their four daughters, Rosanne, Kathleen, Cindy, and Tara, were all brought up in the Roman Catholic faith…
