Young Artists in Brooklyn and Queens Showcase Faith in Annual Christmas Art Competition

Jasmine Medina from Christ the King High School, submitted this piece as a 10th grader.

It’s once again time for The Tablet’s annual “Keep Christ in Christmas” art contest, offering students the chance to unleash their inner Rembrandt and Picasso.

In what’s become a much-anticipated seasonal tradition in the diocese, students who submit artwork have a chance to earn awards and cash prizes.

Last year, more than 200 entries were submitted from students from the Diocese of Brooklyn’s schools and parishes. Once again, handcrafted as labors of love, the young artists’ work showcased how they kept Christ at the center of the Christmas season.

Vivian Xiong, a student at Oour Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy, was the 7th grade winner of the Christmas art contest with this piece.

Resurrection-Ascension Catholic Academy in Rego Park, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy in Forest Hills, St. Margaret Catholic Academy, and Christ the King High School in Middle Village all had multiple entries acknowledged and, for the second year in a row, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy in Belle Harbor and St. Patrick Catholic Academy in Bay Ridge also had winning pieces.

For over 20 years, The Tablet has collaborated with the Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus Council No. 481 on the art contest — the brainchild of which was The Tablet Editor Emeritus Ed Wilkinson and then-Grand Marshal of the Knights Camillo Casano.

This year’s art contest will run through Jan. 7 and culminate in an awards ceremony at the Knights of Columbus on Jan. 14, celebrating the top artwork by students who will receive cash prizes and be recognized for their work.

New Grand Knight Sean Flanagan will be there, as will the Knights’ financial secretary and past Grand Knight Joe Sbarra, and faith director Steven Bilardi.

Sbarra said the Knights are delighted to play a part in the contest every year.

“If you notice in our parking lot, we have a sign that reads, ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’ that has become a part of the legacy of our council,” Sbarra said. “We look forward to participating in this contest every year because it is so important … keeping Christ as the focus of everything we do.”

Tablet Editor Michael Gray said that judging the students’ artwork is a highlight of the holiday season.

“We look forward each year to offering our diocesan school children the venue to express their joy for the holiday through artistic expression,” Gray said. “I see the ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’ art contest as another venue to give schoolchildren the ability to show their faith through their talents.”
