by John Alexander

PROSPECT HEIGHTS — The Tablet’s annual “Keep Christ in Christmas” art contest on Jan. 15 was a big night for students from six Catholic schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Resurrection-Ascension Catholic Academy in Rego Park, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy in Forest Hills, St. Margaret Catholic Academy, and Christ the King High School in Middle Village all had multiple entries acknowledged and, for the second year in a row, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy in Belle Harbor and St. Patrick Catholic Academy in Bay Ridge also had winning pieces.

The Tablet received more than 200 entries into the art contest submitted by students from Catholic academies, high schools, and churches throughout the diocese.

Father Juan Luxama, parochial vicar for The Shrine Church of St. Bernadette in Dyker Heights, was on hand to celebrate the winners and offer words of encouragement to the students.

The Tablet Editor Emeritus Ed Wilkinson, St. Bernadette’s Father Juan Luxama and The Tablet Marketing and Circulation Manager John Alexander.

“I always say that children are the future of the world,” Father Luxama said, who noted that “Keep Christ in Christmas” was a beautiful theme. “Tonight, as we look at the children’s artwork, let us keep that theme in our hearts.”

For over 20 years, The Tablet has collaborated with the Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus Council No. 481 at 1305 86th St. in Dyker Heights on the art contest. Knights of Columbus financial secretary and past Grand Knight Joe Sbarra and its faith director Steven Bilardi welcomed guests.

Sbarra said the Knights are delighted to play a part in the contest every year.

“If you notice in our parking lot we have a sign that reads, ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’ that has become a part of the legacy of our council,” Sbarra said. “We look forward to participating in this contest every year because it is so important … keeping Christ as the focus of everything we do.”

Ed Wilkinson, The Tablet’s Editor Emeritus, who started the contest with then-Grand Marshal of the Knights Camillo Casano, said it’s a great way to evangelize young people.

“We didn’t want Christmas to be remembered just as a secular holiday,” Wilkinson said. “We wanted to make a point that it’s a holy day, and this is a great form of religious education to bring the faith and religious consciousness to the children.”
