For weeks leading into Christmas, more than 500 entries poured into the Tablet Newspaper offices filled with colorful pieces of artwork created by students from Catholic academies, high schools and churches from around the diocese. Once again, handcrafted as labors of love, the young artists’ work showcased how they keep Christ in the Christmas season.

While it was the 11th consecutive year the Tablet collaborated with the Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus Council No. 481, it was also the second year that the contest required the students to dive into Scripture for inspiration and meditate upon Deuteronomy 10: 17-19.

“For the Lord, your God, is the God of gods, the Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who has no favorite, accepts no bribes, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the resident alien, giving them food and clothing. So you too should love the resident alien, for that is what you were in the land of Egypt.”

Out of the 500 plus entires, only 12 winners were selected to celebrate their artistic achievements at the Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus Council center in Dyker Heights, Jan 16.

Parents, family members and faculty from more than 20 Catholic academies, high schools and churches in the Brooklyn diocese witnessed a celebration that included the winners being interviewed by NET-TV and The Tablet.
