Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua of Philadelphia and named Archbishop Justin F. Rigali of St. Louis as his successor. Cardinal Bevilacqua, who turned 80 in June, has headed the Philadelphia Archdiocese since 1988 and has been the oldest active U.S. bishop for the past two-and-a-half years. The retirement and appointment were announced July 15 in Washington by the apostolic nuncio to the United States. (CNS file photo) (July 15, 2003) See PHILADELPHIA (SECOND UPDATE) July 15, 2003.
