Auxiliary Bishops of Brooklyn

Cardinal George William Mundelein, a native of Manhattan and graduate of Manhattan College, the Bronx, was ordained a priest in Rome by Brooklyn Bishop Charles E. McDonnell on June 8, 1895... served as assistant secretary to Bishop McDonnell, Chancellor, and founding rector of Cathedral College, Brooklyn... ordained the first auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn by Bishop McDonnell on June 30, 1909.  In 1915, he was named Archbishop of Chicago and named a cardinal in 1924.  He died Oct. 2, 1939, and is buried in Mundelein, Ill.

Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy, a native of Nashua, N.H., graduated from St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and was ordained a priest in Rome on Sept. 19, 1908... served as secretary to Bishop Mundelein, a member of the faculty of Cathedral College, Brooklyn, secretary to Archbishop Mundelein in Chicago, and president of St. Joseph’s College for Women, Brooklyn... appointed the second auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn on July 28, 1920... appointed the third Ordinary of the Diocese of Brooklyn on Nov. 21, 1921, and served until his death in 1956.  He is buried in the crypt at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, L.I.

Bishop Raymond A. Kearney, a native of Jersey City, N.J., attended Holy Cross College, and the North American College, Rome, where he was ordained March 12, 1927... served as Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor... on Dec. 22, 1934, he was named the third auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn at the age of 32.  He served in that capacity until his death on June 11, 1956... buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.  Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, conducted for girls by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., is named in his memory.

Boardman, a native of Brooklyn, attended St. John’s College and Seminary... ordained May 21, 1921... served at St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands; St. Mary Mother of Jesus, Bensonhurst; St. Anne’s, Brentwood; St. Catherine of Genoa, Brooklyn; and was pastor of Holy Name, Park Slope, 1944-59, and O.L. of Angels, Bay Ridge, 1959-70...  became the fourth auxiliary bishop on May 29, 1952, marking the first time that the diocese had two auxiliary bishops at the same time... died July 17, 1978 and is buried in the crypt at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston.

Reilly, a native of Manhattan, attended Cathedral College, Manhattan, and St. John’s Seminary, Brooklyn… ordained April 1, 1922… served at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Brooklyn; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands; and O.L. Angels, Bay Ridge… director of Diocesan Parish Services, Vice-Chancellor… named fifth auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn on March 15, 1955… died on Nov. 3, 1958 and is buried at Mount St. Mary Cemetery, Flushing. The former Bishop Reilly Diocesan H.S., Fresh Meadows, now St. Francis Prep, was named in his memory.
Bishop Joseph P. Denning, a native of Flushing, attended St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore… ordained May 21, 1932… served at Resurrection, Gerritsen Beach, before being assigned to faculty of Cathedral College, Brooklyn, from 1933 to 1953… administrator of St. Stanislaus, 14th St.; pastor at Queen of Angels, Sunnyside, 1953-60, and O.L. Queen of Martyrs, Forest Hills, 1960-78… named an auxiliary bishop along with Bishop Charles R. Mulrooney on Feb. 24, 1959. He died Feb. 12, 1990, and is buried in the crypt at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston.

Mulrooney, a native of Brooklyn, attended St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore… ordained June 10, 1930… assistant at Holy Rosary, Bed-Stuy, and St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, before being named to the faculty of Cathedral College, Brooklyn… rector and president of Cathedral College, 1952-59… appointed an auxiliary bishop with Bishop Joseph P. Denning on Feb. 24, 1959… served as pastor of St. Jerome’s parish, East Flatbush, 1959-72… died Aug. 5, 1989 and is buried in the crypt at Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston.

 

Bishop John J. Snyder, a native of Manhattan, attended Cathedral College, Brooklyn, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington… ordained June 9, 1951… assistant at St. Mel’s, Flushing, and then was secretary to Archbishop Bryan J. McEntegart and Bishop Francis J. Mugavero…on Dec. 13, 1972, he was named an auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn and served in that capacity until Oct. 2, 1979 when he was named Bishop of St. Augustine, Fla. He retired Dec. 12, 2000 upon reaching the mandatory age of 75 and lives in St. Augustine.
Cardinal Anthony J. Bevilacqua, a native of Brooklyn, attended Cathedral College, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington… ordained June 11, 1949… served at Sacred Hearts-St. Stephen, Carroll Gardens, before being Assistant Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Chancellor… founding director of Diocesan Migration Office… on Oct. 4, 1980, he was named an auxiliary bishop with Bishops Joseph M. Sullivan and Rene A. Valero… Bishop of Pittsburgh 1983-87; Archbishop of Philadelphia, 1987-2000 … named a cardinal May 29, 1991… retired July 15, 2003 at 80… died Jan. 31, 2012… buried in crypt at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Philadelphia.

Sullivan, a native of Brooklyn, attended Cathedral College, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington… ordained June 2, 1956, and served at Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village, before joining Catholic Charities in 1961 where he became executive director… named an auxiliary bishop along with Cardinal Bevilacqua and Bishop Rene A. Valero on Oct. 4, 1980… served as Vicar for Human Services and Regional Bishop of Brooklyn… retired in 2005 after reaching mandatory age… died June 7, 2013… buried in the priests’ plot at St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
