My younger cousin, 4, reminded me how wonderful it is to be young and a child-at-heart. She taught me to place my stresses aside and to enjoy life in the moment.

Several of my classmates volunteer at New York Hospital of Queens. At first, I could not imagine anyone giving up time to volunteer without getting paid. After hearing my classmates’ stories of fulfillment from their volunteer work, I have learned that life is about what you can give, not how much money you have or what you have accomplished.

My 5-year-old sisters taught me to not worry about what other people think or do.

I volunteered at a shelter in the Bronx where we handed out fruit baskets. A homeless man came up to me and handed me a banana after he received his basket. I learned about kindness and generosity from a stranger.
