Values of Catholic Voters

Dear Editor: The discourse in The Tablet over the last year has been somewhat perplexing. We have a President in Donald Trump, who is squarely on the side of the pro-life movement, always uses faith and God in his speeches, and seeks to protect and serve the citizens of the U.S.  His opponents clamor for more abortion, same-sex marriage, gender neutral bathrooms, sanctuary cities, and are moving rapidly toward secularism in their desire to remove God or the mention of God from government, the schools and even their platform.

I have been a registered Democrat for over 50 years and have witnessed the Democratic Party slowly migrate away from Catholic values.  At one time, the Democratic Party supported the pro-life movement, traditional marriage, faith in God, and male and female bathrooms.

The protection of criminal illegal aliens through the use of sanctuary cities is another issue that the Democratic Party supports which flies in the face of law and order. The Church appears to side with the Democrats on this issue and may account for the unbalanced reportage.

The hierarchy of the Church seems unwilling to call out the Democrats, but seem comfortable in their criticism of President Trump. The Catholic Church has been insulted by former President Obama to get off its high horse, and lectured by Democratic Party head, Tom Perez, that a voter cannot be pro-life and be a Democrat, a position which Gov. Andrew Cuomo also supports.

The Democratic Party gives no help with school vouchers either. The Democratic Party has abandoned the values of Catholic voters, and the Catholic Church. It is time to turn our backs on the Democratic Party.

The hierarchy of the Catholic Church may be unwilling or unable to call on their members to change their voter registration. I am under no such constraints. I have changed my registration. It is easy to do,  a mere postcard. I would encourage other Catholic voters to do the same.

The Democratic Party has shunned Catholic voters and their foundational family values. We should all turn our backs on the Democratic Party.

  1. Well said.

I was once a Democrat. I wish the old Democratic Party of my youth could be reborn. Sadly, that seems impossible.

Maspeth people always seem to get it correct. I dare not say “right.”
