The Brooklyn diocese received a pleasant surprise on April 29 when it was announced that Bishop Neil E. Tiedemann, bishop of Mandeville, Jamaica, had been named an auxiliary bishop for Brooklyn and Queens. Above, Bishop DiMarzio welcomed Bishop Tiedemann at a Mass of thanksgiving at Immaculate Conception Center on Aug. 4. He was installed at the pastor of St. Matthias parish, Ridgewood, on Nov. 19. The neighboring Diocese of Rockville Centre, which encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties, received its new ordinary, Bishop John O. Barres. Below, he is shown at an introductory press conference with Bishop William Murphy, whose resignation because of age was accepted by the Vatican.
