Letters to the Editor

To Attract Attention?

Dear Editor: Headlines are to attract attention, and readers, and offer a snapshot of a story. I’m not disturbed by this headline (Wealthy Catholics to Target Cardinals with ‘Red Hat Report,’ The Tablet, Oct. 13), but I would also point out that, quite reasonably, people with considerable discretionary cash would be preferred guests in the limited rented space available to the organizers.

I must say I’m a bit underwhelmed by the budget of this project, “The estimated first-year expenditures are listed at $1,126,500.” If the meeting drew 200 people and each donated $5,000 that would get close to the mark. That figure, if anywhere near accurate, wouldn’t demonstrate to me a great deal of personal commitment to the project’s success or bespeak a great passion. If the event drew anything less, that suggests that the subversive effort underway is more likely a misguided attempt to bring us back to rigid orthodoxy.
