Dear Editor: You had a letter (June 27) in The Tablet from a CYO volunteer who received the Bishop Mugavero CYO Award and was linking it to today’s CYO Hall of Fame. I agree.
I’ve always considered the Bishop Mugavero CYO Award the predecessor to the current CYO Hall of Fame. Just done in earlier decades. Here are some of the interesting parts of the CYO history.
The Bishop Mugavero CYO award was started in 1975 and continued into the 1980s. It was held at St. James Cathedral in Brooklyn. A number of people received that award over the years and The Tablet always published the story with the honorees. I do not know why the award stopped.
Two people were selected by the CYO Office at the diocesan level. Plus each parish was permitted to nominate candidates. My father was one of the first two diocesan selections. I have the actual award as my Mom gave it to me some years ago.
Bob Corrigan of St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights, who has been in The Tablet a few times, has received both the Bishop’s CYO award and been inducted into the CYO Hall of Fame. There may be others.
