Recognizing CYO Volunteers

Dear Editor: Last year I read about the first inductees into the CYO Hall of Fame and my reaction was ‘I’m already there.’ I say that because there are many of us who received the Bishop Mugavero Medal from the Bishop way back in the day for helping out with our local parish sports programs.

I received mine back in 1981 or 1982. It meant the world to me to receive an award from the Bishop for doing something I enjoyed very much, especially at such a young age. I never expected it, but I was thankful to be recognized.

So once again I pick up The Tablet and I see the second group of inductees. All great stories, all great people. I don’t have to personally know them. Just by reading their stories and understanding what goes into helping your local sports program, I know they deserve the honor.

Before the CYO Hall of Fame, there were so many who received medals from the Bishop for the same reason that these great people are in the Hall of Fame. I don’t know whose idea this was but it was a great one and I applaud it. Getting involved in youth sports is very important for the children of the community.
