The Great Irish Fair – Irish Fair Benefits Catholic Schools

The 30th Great Irish Fair was held Sept. 17-18 at MCU Park in Coney “Ireland.”  Bill Hogan ruled as Chief Brehon and Elizabeth Flood reigned as Colleen Queen. For two days, the wail of the bagpipes could be heard while corned beef and cabbage was served in generous portions. Organized by the Irish American Building Society Charities, the Fair benefits Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens. Retired Auxiliary Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan was the celebrant of the opening Mass. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio celebrated the Sunday morning liturgy.  Special guests included newly elected Congressman Bob Turner and Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes. A lifetime achievement award was presented to Bob Catell, former director of Brooklyn Union Gas, for his involvement in the Fair since its inception.
