Dear Editor: With all of the controversy surrounding Father James Martin, S.J., people are getting the impression that the Catholic Church is doing nothing for those experiencing same-sex attraction.
Father Martin speaks about building a bridge. We already have a bridge. Since 1980, the Catholic Church has had the international Courage Apostolate to serve those experiencing same-sex attraction. Courage follows the joyful message of the Gospel, emphasizing spirituality, service, fellowship, chastity, good friendships, mutual support and being good examples.
We also have Encourage which is a support for parents and relatives of those who are experiencing same-sex attraction. People who get involved in Courage or Encourage find renewed strength personally and spiritually.
Each one of us is made in the image and likeness of God as a son or a daughter, male or female. According to the Bible and the teaching of the Church, there are only two orientations: male and female. One may be a male experiencing same-sex attractions. Or one may be a female experiencing same-sex attraction. But that does not make them any less of a man or a woman.
Courage and Encourage have been life-saving and life-giving ministries for so many suffering in this way. Do not be afraid. www.couragerc.org or 203-803-1564.
