Letters to the Editor

The Catholic Joyce Family

Dear Editor: James Joyce would agree with the June 8th editorial: “The Courage of the Newly Ordained.” In his story “The Sisters,”Joyce reflects, “I wondered how anybody had ever found in himself the courage” to be priest.

Joyce’s brother, Charley, entered the diocesan seminary but stayed only one year. Joyce’s sister, Margaret (1884–1964) joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1909 and emigrated to New Zealand where she taught high school music (piano and violin). She died in Auckland 54 years later at the age of 80.

Happy Bloomsday!

BROTHER ED KENT, O.S.F.
