For Donald Hoffman, mental health is nothing to be ashamed of
Hoffman, an Astoria resident, has struggled with bipolar disorder and depression for most of his life, and since 2013, he has received services from Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens’ (CCBQ) mental health and rehabilitation center in Jackson Heights.
The turkey giveaway, held every year in one parish in Brooklyn and one in Queens, is sponsored by CCBQ and some local businesses. This year, 700 turkeys, canned goods and Thanksgiving meal fixings were distributed to families in need.
Seven years after Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, Catholic Charities of Brooklyn & Queens has reopened its Head Start center on Coney Island after the previous building was closed because of damage caused by Sandy.

On Aug. 2, it hosted its 11th annual “Kids Fun Day” at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria, where it had games and activities for children, distributed school supplies and offered free products and medical services from vendors.
Joliet’s St. Margaret Mary Church in Naperville, Ill. came to Brooklyn in July to assist Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens. The youth came as part of the Young Neighbors in Action program, which involves youth from across the country taking part in volunteer projects.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens hosted on June 19 the agency’s annual humanitarian awards and benefit dinner, a fundraiser held this year at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan.
