Queens’ native and past music director at Our Lady Queen of Mercy Church in Forest Hills, Joseph Martin, has orchestrated a unique musical performance, for Friday, Oct. 5, 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church in Lynbrook. Vaughn Williams’ Mass in G Minor will be presented Acapella Style. Martin said:“This piece is universally difficult to pull off. It is like trying to pull of a bank heist.”

Written in 1921 by Ralph Vaughn Williams as a reaction to World War I, it was intended to be performed in a concert setting, rather than as part of a Mass. Martin said that it was, “too gaudy to be considered liturgical.”

Three choruses, each including soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers will sing unaided by instruments. Martin is one of 12 soloists singing in the choruses. As a special treat, Martin commissioned 2 separate works that will be sung after the Mass. Everyone participating in the production are professional choral singers donating their time and talent for the glory of God.
