Handmade Rosaries for Students

With some string, beads, a ruler and devotion to Mary and the church, Emily Faugno has been making Rosary beads and distributing them to students at Sacred Heart Catholic Academy, East Glendale. The Ignatian Volunteer Corps are volunteer adults over the age of 50 who offer their life skills and experiences one to two days a week to directly serve those in need. Volunteers gather monthly to prayerfully reflect on their service and to deepen their spirituality in the Ignatian tradition. Free summer Bible study at St. Mark Catholic Academy, Sheesphead Bay will be led by Father Michael Panicali on Tuesdays, July 17-Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The focus will the letters of St. Paul, missionary of Jesus Christ.

The prayer group of Immaculate Conception, Astoria, will celebrate its 17th anniversary with a Mass of thanksgiving on July 19, 7 p.m. Dinner and fellowship to follow.

This week’s Tip of the Tablet Talk Top Hat goes to Sister Gina Fleming, O.P.

She received the Pat Brady Award at this year’s Dominican High Schools Preaching Conference which was held June 25-30.

Sister Gina has worked tirelessly for 20 years to bring the Dominican spirit and history to young people around the nation.

Most recently, she formed the “Dominican Youth Movement” which pulls under one umbrella the national and local Dominican High School Preaching Conferences, the Preaching in Action College Conference, Dominican Young Adults and the International Dominican Youth Movement.

When presenting the award, the director of the high school conference, Sister Mary Soher, O.P., labeled her as one of many people in the Dominican Order who “truly listen deeply to God” and speaks to young people “not only to them in their hearts but through the signs of the times.”

Problem Solving with a Club on the Green

Members and supporters of the Thomas Dongan Council of the Knights of Columbus got together for the ninth annual John J. “Big Bird” Moloney III Golf Memorial on June 29 at Dyker Beach Golf Course. They raised $15,000 for Cathedral Prep Seminary and another $1,000 for Wheelchairs for Warriors Fund. In all, 125 golfers and 185 dinner supporters continued the tradition in honoring Moloney and the passion he had for family, friends and the devotion to charitable endeavors.
