Brooklyn Commemorates Irish in Philly
The Commodore Barry Club of Brooklyn traveled to Philadelphia for a day of commemoration and festivities. The bus arrived at Old St. Mary’s Church, where Archbishop Charles J. Chaput celebrated a Mass in honor of the church’s 250th anniversary. Members explored the colonial neighborhood while honoring the patriot who emigrated from Ireland, fought with George Washington in the American Revolution and started the American Navy. For many years, the club has worked with other Irish-American groups to find a fitting memorial to Commodore Barry at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. The club has raised more than $6,000 towards The Gate, which is expected to be dedicated in May, 2014. Archbishop Chaput received a commemoration of Old St. Mary’s Church; Mary Nolan and John Houlihan place a wreath of Commodore Barry’s grave.
