Under sunny skies, students and families of St. Anselm Catholic Academy laced up their sneakers and took to the streets of Bay Ridge on Friday, Oct. 6 for the school’s annual fundraising Walk-for-Education in support of their school. Younger ones took a shorter route, while the upper grades proudly marched through the community, displaying grade banners, like the one held by fifth graders above, and witnessing to the vitality and importance of Catholic education.

Msgr. Kevin Noone, pastor of Our Lady of Angels parish will serve as the grand marshal of the annual Ragamuffin Parade in Bay Ridge this Saturday, Oct. 14. Also being honored is Ray Aalbue as Person of the Year.
Now in its 51st year, the parade was started when Father James McKenna, then-assigned to Our Lady of Angels parish, and resident Cliff Scanlon, rounded up some neighborhood children from different parishes to put on a parade – just for fun.
Today, children and families continue the tradition, wearing costumes and smiles as they march through the streets.
Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Academy. Then the parade kicks off at 1 p.m., rain or shine, along Third Ave., starting at 76th Street and finishing at 92 Street.

The Johnnies are headed to the Emerald Isle. Through a new academic and international collaboration, St. John’s University and a fellow Catholic institution of higher learning, Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, have announced a new partnership.
The new partnership allows for St. John’s students to study art and design, philosophy and theology with top professors at Mary Immaculate College as part of the SJU’s signature Discover the World: Europe program, starting with the spring 2018 semester.

Deacon Philip Franco will be the honoree at Queen of the Rosary Catholic Academy’s second annual benefit dinner at Giando on the Water, Oct. 18.
Born and raised in Williamsburg, Deacon Franco has a long and respected reputation as an educator and administrator in the diocese. He previously served as a director and secretary of Queen of the Rosary.
The event includes hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks, dessert, DJ entertainment and a commemorative journal. There will also be raffles and silent auction items available for purchase. All proceeds from the event will support Queen of the Rosary Catholic Academy. Filmed over 211 days in nine countries and five continents over four years, the documentary “This Changes Everything” is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.
