Futures in Education hosted its 2013 Angel Reception at Citi Field, Flushing. The “Be an Angel to a Student” program is one way Futures in Education provides students with need-based scholarships and adults the chance to change the life of a child through the gift of education. The Angel Reception brings together students and their Angels (donors who sponsor a portion of a child’s tuition for $1,500 a year), and students get the chance to thank their donors. Also present were principals from the schools, which Angels’ students attend.
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio presented a check, representing the $8.2 million dollars awarded to students this year thanks to Futures in Education, to Dr. Tom Chadzutko, superintendent of the Catholic Schools of Brooklyn and Queens. The evening’s formal program included remarks by Nick Vendikos, development director of Futures in Education; Clarissa Elgarten, chair of the Angels Program; Msgr. Jamie J. Gigantiello, vicar for development of the Diocese of Brooklyn; and Brianna Hurst, an eighth-grade scholarship recipient from Blessed Sacrament School, Cypress Hills, who shared her personal experience as a recipient and her gratitude to those who have made it possible.
