Caroline Latham has been named the new principal of St. Joseph H.S., Downtown Brooklyn.
The Sisters of St. Joseph, who administer the high school, announced the appointment earlier this week.
Latham will replace Sister Joan Gallagher, C.S.J., who has been principal since 2006. Sister Joan was elected to the leadership team of the congregation in April.
Established in 1904 in historic downtown Brooklyn, St. Joseph H.S. was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, L.I. Today, the high school serves 300 young women of all faiths and backgrounds from all five boroughs of New York City.
Caroline Latham is a graduate of the Sisters of St. Joseph Schools: she attended The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates, and currently serves on its board. Catholic schools have shaped her educational philosophy, and the mission of St. Joseph H.S. mirrors her own philosophy.
Latham believes in differentiated instruction in order to reach every student and challenge them to achieve the highest goals they have set forth for themselves. At St. Joseph H.S., respect for the uniqueness and dignity of each student is fostered.
“Our competitive society requires students to receive a solid education,” Latham said, “but each one also deserves someone who is sensitive to their individual needs.”
“Caroline has expressed her personal appreciation for the education she received at a Sister of St. Joseph School, acknowledging the powerful influence it had on her personal and professional life,” said Sister Helen Kearney, C.S.J., and president of the Sisters of St. Joseph Brentwood.
“She is highly motivated to work with the entire St. Joseph High School community to sustain our mission and maintain a viable and sustainable school that will have a positive influence on the lives of the young women there.”
Since 2010, Latham has been the mathematics department chairperson for grades kindergarten through 12 at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Manhattan. She was previously the mathematics department chairperson at St. Agnes Boys School, also Manhattan. She also taught at the Hewitt School, The American School in Japan, The Bank Street College of Education, and Cornell University’s Downstate Campus in New York City.
She has just received “New York Family” Magazine’s Blackboard Award, which honors the finest educators and schools from all sectors (public, private, charter, and parochial) and grade levels (nursery through high school).
After attending high school at The Mary Louis Academy, Latham earned her bachelor of business administration degree from Bernard M. Baruch College of the City of New York, and her master of science in math leadership from Bank Street College of Education. She is currently a resident of Rockville Centre, L.I
