St. Francis Prep Wins State Volleyball Crown

The St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, varsity volleyball team won this year’s GCHSAA state volleyball tournament on Nov. 8.

The team went 5-1 in pool play, which helped them earn the No. 1 seed for the semifinal match.

St. Francis Girls Varsity 2013 State ChampionsThe L’il Terriers went 2-0 against John F. Kennedy Catholic H.S., Somers, N.Y., winning 25-18 and 25-22. Jaclyn LaForgia led the team with eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Caroline Gorecki had five kills and four blocks, and Nicole Tong added 18 assists.

The team also went 2-0 against St. Anthony’s H.S., Huntington, L.I., winning 25-14 and 25-21. LaForgia again led the team with 11 kills, 11 digs and four service aces. Steph Sokolich recorded 14 service points. Jessica Vishnudat had eight kills and four digs, and Tong had 24 assists.

To round out pool play, St. Francis Prep went 1-1 against St. Mary’s Lancaster, Buffalo, N.Y., losing 14-25 and then winning 25-8. LaForgia led the team with seven kills and seven digs. Gorecki registered five kills and three blocks. Sokolich managed four kills, and Tong had 18 assists. Johairy Rivadeneira had an all-around performance with three kills, four service aces and five digs.

In the semifinal match, the L’il Terriers defeated Kennedy Catholic in two games, winning 25-22 and 25-18. LaForgia led the team with 13 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Gorecki and Sokolich each had six kills and two blocks. Tong recorded 26 assists.

St. Francis Prep relied on an entire team effort in the finals, in which the team recorded a win over St. Mary’s Lancaster in three games, 25-23, 25-22 and 26-24.

LaForgia led the team with 16 kills and nine digs. Rivadeneira had four service aces, three kills and 10 digs. Vishnudat tallied six kills, two blocks and four assists. Sokolich managed five kills, three blocks and two service aces. Gorecki recorded four blocks, two kills and two service aces. Kaila Berlovan had 10 digs, and Tong had 28 assists.
