The St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, varsity and junior varsity girls’ cross-country teams, pictured above, each won their respective Brooklyn-Queens diocesan titles this fall season.
The varsity team went on to place third in the city championship, while the JV finished second citywide.
Sophomore Chiara Cinquemani won the individual varsity Brooklyn-Queens title with a time of 16:38 on the 2.5-mile course at Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx. Senior Amaya Okogeri captured the JV individual diocesan title, finishing the course in 19:47.
This year marks the Prep’s first varsity diocesan title victory since 2005 and the first JV victory since 2011. It is the first time since 2000 that the Prep team won the varsity and junior varsity titles while also having each individual winner.
The squads relied on teamwork all season. The team is coached by 30-plus-year veteran Jim May along with his assistants Mary Edwards and Margarita Sabogal.
