As part of the Veterans’ Committee vote, former MLB manager and player Joe Torre was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y., on Monday.
Torre is a graduate of St. Francis Prep, Brooklyn, and was baptized at Good Shepherd Church, Marine Park.
Torre won four World Series titles as manager for the New York Yankees in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
He will be inducted on July 27, 2014 along with fellow former managers Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa.
The results of the Baseball Writers Association of America ballots will be released Jan. 8, 2014. Former New York Mets’ catcher and devout Catholic Mike Piazza will be on the ballot for the sedond year.
